Richard Somers: NJ’s First Martyr in the War Against Jihad

Remember Richard Somers on September 4. The Day He Was Killed In Tripoli in 1804 Fighting America’s First War Against Jihad

 By Seth Grossman, Esq.

At 4pm on Friday, September 4, 2020, we will tell the story of Richard Somers on the day he and all 13 men of his ship Intrepid were killed in Tripoli in 1804.  We will gather by his statue in the park next to the Somers Point Library at 801 Shore Road across the street from Charlies on New Jersey Ave.  We will also explain the images on the mural painted by Millville Artist Maryann Cannon on the wall of the library.

Events have been held in Somers Point to remember Richard Somers every September since 2004, the 200th year since his death.

Renewed interest in Richard Somers caused the Somers Point Historical Society and local government to erect a statue in his memory at 801 Shore Road in Somers Point in 2013.   In 2015, they, together with the Somers Point Arts Commission engaged Millville artist Maryann Cannon to paint a mural telling the Richard Somers story on the wall of the adjoining library.

During each of the past sixteen years, we never heard the same story twice.  Each year new research and personalities added fresh details to the story and gave us new and interesting insights into every aspect of American life.   Below are some of the basic facts of the Richard Somers story discussed in previous years.

1.        Richard Somers, like most Americans of his time completed school at age 15 and mastered a trade by age 17.  As a teenager, Somers was the skipper of sailing ships that carried merchandise between Philadelphia and New York.

2.        When America’s War for Independence against England was over, we were so committed to peace, that we completely disbanded our navy, and cut our army down to less than a thousand men. We depended completely on good will, negotiation, and diplomacy to protect our people.

3.        As soon as America won independence in 1783, our ships in the Mediterranean and Atlantic were attacked by “pirates” from the “Barbary” kingdoms of North Africa. They seized our ships and everything that was in them.  They held passengers and crew for ransom or sold them into slavery.

4.        When American Ambassadors John Adams and Thomas Jefferson asked England and France to help us defend our ships, they were advised to pay bribes or tribute in advance to the Barbary kingdoms.   That is what England and France did.

5.        In 1786, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson met with the Ambassador from Tripoli (now Libya), one of the Barbary Kingdoms.  They said America was a new nation thousands of miles away that had done no harm to the Barbary kingdoms of North Africa.  They asked why we were being attacked.   This is what they were told:  “It was written in their Koran that all nations which had not acknowledged the Prophet were sinners, whom it was the right and duty of the faithful to plunder and enslave; and that every Mussulman who was slain in this warfare was sure to go to paradise”.

6.        This is why Thomas Jefferson bought a Koran for his library.  Jefferson and Adams both urged Congress to build a navy to protect our ships.  That request was rejected.  For the next 12 years, Congress spent roughly 10% of its federal budget as bribes, ransom, or tribute to the Barbary Kingdoms of North Africa.

7.        The Barbary Kingdoms used much of this money to buy faster ships and more modern weapons.   They soon demanded even more money.   Then French pirates began to attack American ships in the Caribbean and the French government demanded bribes to stop them!

8.        In 1798, Americans had enough. They shouted, “Millions for defense, not one cent for tribute.”  We built a new navy.   Richard Somers was one of the first to join at age 20.

9.        Although Richard Somers reported to Annapolis to become a naval officer, all training took place at sea on warships where students were called “midshipman”. He and the other young officers got on-the-job education fighting French pirates in the Caribbean.

10.      The Barbary “pirates” were not legally pirates. Pirates were outlaws who were tried and executed when captured.  The Barbary “pirates” who attacked Americans were “privateers” or “corsairs” who had a license to do what they did.   They were hired by nations who were legally at war with America.   When captured, they were held as prisoners-of-war under international law.

11.      In 1801, Thomas Jefferson became President, and Tripoli demanded additional bribes. Jefferson sent our new American navy across the Atlantic to fight them.   Richard Somers commanded The Nautilus, one of our new warships, at age 23.

12.         The original monument to Richard Somers, near New York Ave. School near Bike Path in Somers Point, NJ.

13.      It reads: “Richard Somers. . . perished in the 25th year of his age in the Ketch Intrepid in the memorable attempt to destroy the Turkish Flotilla in the Harbour of Tripoli on the night of the 4th of Sep. 1804.”

14.   Although most historians today say America fought four “Barbary” kingdoms in North Africa, the original Richard Somers monument by the New York Avenue School in Somers Point states that our enemy was “The Turkish flotilla”. At the time, the Turkish Sultan controlled the large Ottoman Empire in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East and was the Caliph, or religious leader of the entire Islamic world.    That is depicted on the mural.

15.  At first, Europeans leaders laughed at America for sending a small force of young, inexperienced sailors against feared, veteran sea-fighters who had defied and defeated the strongest navies of Europe.

16.  However, those young Americans soon defeated the Barbary “pirates” in battle after battle.  England’s Admiral Lord Nelson called one American attack “the most bold and daring act of the age.” Pope Pius VII said the United States “had done more for the cause of Christianity than the most powerful nations of Christendom for ages.”   For years, military historian Chipp Reid, author of Intrepid Sailors, spoke at our September events to explain how these young Americans did it.

17.  In the summer of 1804, Richard Somers and other American officers were afraid the politicians in Washington would bring them home before they fully defeated the enemy. They came up with a daring and risky plan to destroy the “Turkish flotilla” in Tripoli with tons of explosives packed into the “volcano ship” Intrepid.  The mission failed.   Richard Somers and all members of his crew were killed in the harbor of Tripoli on September 4, 1804.   However, they inspired the rest of the fleet to continue the struggle.   The following year, America’s first marines landed on the shores of Tripoli, and won a decisive victory.

18.  The Barbary Kingdoms did far more than attack American ships. They were the center of a massive slave trade that for centuries captured and sold millions of slaves from as far north as Iceland and as far south as central Africa.  Richard Somers and those young Americans took a giant step in ending that slave trade.   They also raised awareness of the evils of slavery in America, and intensified efforts to free African-American slaves here in this country.

Pastor Winship takes on the anti-religion “Equality” Act

If you think the New Green Deal is outrageous, wait until you hear the details of the soon to be advanced Equality Act.  This piece of legislation will add sexual orientation and gender identity (A moral belief) to the 1964 Civil Rights Act.  In prohibiting discrimination against LGBTQ morality, the bill effectually legalizes discrimination against Christianity.  In this program, I explain the nature of the bill, the broad support for the bill, and how the LGBTQ agenda will (and will not) be stopped.

Are celebrities like Lady Gaga new model “Christians”?

One famous actress once observed of another… “that type would wear a gold-plated dog turd around her neck to get attention.”

And so we come to Lady Gaga, the latest in a long incarnation of “entertainers” who begin by desperately seeking public attention… and end with thinking themselves the centers of the universe.  Just when did court jesters (and these jesters perform, first and foremost, to gain the favor of a fashionable elite) replace philosophers and theologians?

The Gagster has been in the news again, decrying the existence of any outpost of traditional Christianity – you know, the kind that existed for a couple thousand years before the coming of her hirsute arse – and suggesting that Christians follow her interpretation of the New Testament.  Yes, the Gospel as read by Lady Gagged and Gagged Again.

Not that she’s read the Bible… no, she’s just kind of “felt” it.  But hey, feelings trump knowledge, right?  So this is the Gag… read it:

“Here it is. Lady Gaga calls herself a Christian and then tries to convince the rest of the world that Vice President Mike Pence is not a good representation of what Christianity actually is. Why? Because he believes in traditional marriage between one man and one woman. Gaga's comment came after people on the Left became outraged to learn that Karen Pence is going to teach at a Christian school that follows biblical teaching about sexuality. That led to broad attacks against Christian schools in general, revealing that they have become the next big target for the anti-Christian Left.

…It exposes the tacit end game of an unseen spiritual force in this no-holds-barred age of fury – to defeat the cultural impact of the Christian faith by redefining it.”

If they can redefine what Christianity is – update it into something fitting their image – they can then simply define away traditional Christianity (the 2,000+ years old religious faith) as a common hate crime, something not protected by the First Amendment.  And then they will criminalize its practice.

This new model “Christianity” revolves around sex.  It calls itself “progressive” when, in fact, it is a regression into the unrestrained carnality and violence of the religions of antiquity.  It “celebrates” satisfying the “animal” in mankind that Mohandas Gandhi warned about.

Of course, the more “progressive” members of our political class, failing to come to terms with America’s relative economic and cultural decline, have happily embraced the promise of the politics of sex.  Instead of assuring voters of a “chicken in every pot” they tout “orgasms for every peccadillo.”

In a politics dominated by a One Percent who long ago stopped worrying about things like food and housing (Governor Murphy anyone???), the endless quest for sexual fulfillment can fill the vacuum.  Aldous Huxley observed: “As political and economic freedom diminishes, sexual freedom tends compensatingly to increase.”  (Brave New World, 1932)

Stephen Baskerville has written an excellent book on what Newsweek magazine described as “the politics of sex” and it is a must read for every legislator and policy maker in New Jersey.  Baskerville is a scholar of political science and a leading authority on divorce, child custody, and the family court system.  He holds a BA in International Relations from American University as well as a PhD in Political Science and History from the London School of Economics.  Baskerville is currently Professor of Government and Director of the International Politics & Policy program at Patrick Henry College.  Prior to this he was Professor of Political Science at Howard University.

The book is called, The New Politics of Sex (The Sexual Revolution, Civil Liberties, and the Growth of Government Power).  In his book, Baskerville outlines the emergence of a new political ideology that derives its claims to political power from neither economic relations or ethnicity or race – but from control of sexuality.  He notes that, until recently, scholars and journalists have been reluctant to analyze this new phenomenon with any depth or detachment – for fear of repercussions.  One critic had this to take away from reading the book:

“I found it intriguing to understand how the roles of the sexes have not really changed. Women are still predominately the ones who care for children – they just do it as day care workers or welfare recipients now – and men still predominately provide the financial support – they just do it by paying court ordered child support now, or by paying tax dollars that the government redistributes to women on welfare.

What predominately has changed is that we’ve gone from having nuclear family units with a man at the head of it who is looked to for leadership and support, to being a herd-like society with government at the head, giving the orders, and being looked to take care of us.

Instead of individual family units, we’ve become more like one big family with government as our daddy. And instead of that daddy taking us to church once a week to worship God, our new daddy takes us to the government schools five days a week where we learn to serve the state in the new religion of socialism.”

Oh, and where our children learn that pot is “medicinal”, abortion is a “rite of passage”, and STD’s are a normal by-product of a life well lived.  Happy days!

You will be made to care

Erick Erickson, the conservative radio host who was editor at RedState -- a top national conservative news and opinion website, has a new book coming out this month.  It's title: You Will Be Made to Care: The War on Faith, Family and Your Freedom to Believe!

Erickson and his co-author, Bill Blankschaen, describe how religious liberty is under attack in America and how our "freedom to believe" may not last much longer.  Their message is for all those who say they don’t care about the culture war:  “The Left will not let you stay on the sidelines. You will be made to care.”

Look at how quickly intolerance entrenched itself in Britain, so much so that a few years ago an effort was started to claw back some of the freedom that had been lost.  Here is comedian and free speech activist Rowan Atkinson speaking on the subject:

By imposing strict "politically correct" codes and defining the expression of any opinion outside the establishment orthodoxy as "hate speech," those who oppose freedom are determined to drive Christianity from the public square.  The effort to make Christian small businesses conform to this "new religion" by offering them the option of conversion or bankruptcy represents only a skirmish in the wider effort to drive the Christian faith into the shadows.

You will not be left alone.  You will be made to "celebrate."

We have been here before -- and warned before.  Lillian Smith was a good and tolerant liberal.  She one of the first Southerners to write about the evils of segregation, and lived long enough to see most of that system eradicated and reforms enacted.  But at the end of her life, she became concerned that the love of ideology would trump humanity.  In accepting the Charles S. Johnson Award, she wrote:

“It is his millions of relationships that will give man his humanity… It is not our ideological rights that are important but the quality of our relationships with each other, with all men, with knowledge and art and God that count.

The civil rights movement has done a magnificent job but it is now faced with the ancient choice between good and evil, between love for all men and lust for a group’s power.”

“Every group on earth that has put ideology before human relations has failed; always disaster and bitterness and bloodshed have come.  This movement, too, may fail.  If it does, it will be because it aroused in men more hate than love, more concern for their own group than for all people, more lust for power than compassion for human need.”

“We must avoid the trap of totalism which lures a man into thinking there is only one way, one answer, one option, and that others must be forced into this One Way, and forced into it Now.”

Totalism.  One Way -- forced into it Now.  Prior to the Supreme Court's decision in Obergefell, in every state where same-sex marriage was legalized, people of conscience who objected to participating in someone else's "celebration" were targeted and made to pay for their dissent.  So the Court legalizes same-sex marriage and what does the winning side do?  It starts talking about stripping religious organizations of their tax exempt status.  Not the best way to build comity.

That's why You Will Be Made to Care is such a timely book.  It recognizes that the assault is under way and details the steps you can take to resist.
