Murphy allies call for LESS police at schools, making softer targets for killers

by Rubashov

Ideology is like religion for some people. It is an act of faith, and they are devoted to it.

Late yesterday, a group of organizations allied with Governor Phil Murphy and the Trenton Democrats put out a press statement titled: “Social Justice Groups Object to Increasing Police Presence at NJ Schools in Wake of Texas Shooting”.

Even Michael Moore, who wrote and produced the documentary “Bowling for Columbine”, recognized that shootings end when the good guys with the guns show up. So, what are Murphy’s allies up to?

These are some of the same Murphy allies who applauded the Democrats’ decision to use men with guns (State Police) to “secure” the State House against Covid. Shouldn’t at least the same level of security be applied to protecting school children against gunmen?

Apparently not. In the minds of many of Murphy and the Trenton Democrats' most fervent ideological comrades, the use of men with guns (the police) should only be applied when there is a policy question that needs to be decided. It’s not about protecting lives.

In counseling Governor Murphy, his allies warned against what they called “knee-jerk reactions”. Here are excerpts from some of their statements:

“More school security on the backend is not the solution to this problem. It will also have a particularly negative impact on students of color who are often introduced into the school-to-prison pipeline through school security, which is why we recently joined other advocates to petition the State Board of Education to prohibit the use of security aid on ineffective expenditures like school resource officers.” (New Jersey Institute for Social Justice)

“Increased police presence in schools does only one thing: subject children and families of Color to multiple traumas and violence, whether by individual actors or institutions plagued with systemic racism.” (New Jersey Alliance for Immigrant Justice)

“It is imperative that New Jersey take action to ensure the safety of students but adding more police to our schools in the wake of this horrific tragedy is not the solution. Increased police presence in schools will lead to more students being introduced to the criminal legal system, especially students of color and students with disabilities. We need a comprehensive plan for student safety that provides real support to our students, including restorative justice practices and access to trained mental health professionals.” (ACLU of New Jersey)

“More police will not make schools safe. We join the Governor in calling for stronger gun control.” (Education Law Center)

There is a reason schools in Israel are not targeted by terrorists but buses are. Schools are hardened targets in Israel. As a CBS Evening News report noted in 2018, “At one high school in Israel, we saw a typical scene -- an armed guard outside the main entrance. Since 1974 there have only been half a dozen terror attacks on Israeli schools.” Highly trained, former military, armed with a fully automatic rifle. No kid with a semi-automatic “military looking” weapon would stand a chance.

The tragedy, the loss of life, would be limited to the disturbed child or young adult with a gun. It would be limited to him. Which is a step forward while we begin a rational conversation on this subject.

Since 1974 there have only been half a dozen terror attacks on Israeli schools."

“In a time of deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act.”

George Orwell
