Two Pro-Life Leaders ask: Is Chris Smith Really Pro-Life?

By Pastor Dominick Cuozzo & Rev. Greg Quinlan

Congressman Chris Smith (R-04) has long been judged to be a Pro-Life legislator. Smith was a Pro-Life activist when first elected to Congress in 1980. The question conservatives must ask themselves is this: Have four decades in Washington, DC, changed this one-time true believer? For the Pro-Life label to mean something, it must withstand the test of scrutiny.

Spoiler alert, it does not. Not if actions and votes count for more than labels – and it is actions and votes that tell the true story. If you vote for something that expands abortion and acts as a governmental take-over of healthcare, how can you claim to be Pro-Life? Congressman Smith voted AGAINST the repeal of Obamacare. And Obamacare funds abortions.

Why would someone who claims to be Pro-Life support Obamacare? Was the Star-Ledger/NJ.com’s Jonathan Salant right when he cited this observation (by one of the authors here): “The Chris Smith of 20 years ago would not support the Chris Smith of today”?

The Kaiser Family Foundation website details how Obamacare funds abortion:

https://www.kff.org/womens-health-policy/issue-brief/coverage-for-abortion-services-and-the-aca/

“The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) makes significant changes to health coverage for women by expanding access to coverage and broadening the health benefits that many will receive. In January 2014 the coverage expansions to assist uninsured individuals gain access to coverage took effect. The issue of abortion coverage was at the heart of many debates in the run up to the passage of the law and continues to the present day.”

Congressman Smith should not take Pro-Life voters for granted. His votes are something that he must explain. As for Pro-Life leaders and activists, before simply accepting the label “Pro-Life” that he applies to himself, they should ask Congressman Smith some tough questions and get to the bottom of why he claims to be Pro-Life while voting to support pro-abortion Obamacare.

Every Pro-Life leader who supports Congressman Smith without getting an answer to this question is responsible for the same vote and its consequences – and will be on record for doing so. Votes have consequences. Congressman Smith must explain his.

Pastor Cuozzo was elected to the Plumsted Township Committee in November 2021.

Pastor Dominick Cuozzo is a member of the New Jersey Faith Leaders Advisory Council. Rev. Greg Quinlan is President of the Center for Garden State Families.
